The operating system has very little to nothing to do with networking. Unless you are in a corporate environment with a setup that doesn't automatically grant IP addresses to new MAC addresses, you can connect a computer with any operating system to any network and access the internet and any cross-platforms services like FTP or HTTP. Software like Samba and NFS makes the choice of operating system even more irrelevant as far as sharing files goes.
